Event - Fair for 300th anniversary (Brampton)

A SUMMER fair with a difference is planned for next month – celebrating the 300th anniversary of three small South Yorkshire schools.

Brampton Ellis Infants, Brampton Ellis Juniors and Hemingfield Ellis Primary, all in the Rotherham villages of Brampton Bierlow and Hemingfield, are all Church of England schools.

But they are also supported by the Brampton Ellis Trust, a unique educational charity founded by local philanthropist George Ellis in 1711.

Dr Ellis was the squire of Brampton Hall and endowed the trust with money from his will in 1711 and the charity has supported local schoolchildren since.

Now all three schools are working together to make the big anniversary go with a bang, with a Year 300 Summer Fair at Brampton Ellis Juniors on Wath Road on Saturday, July 9.

There will be an exhibition of memorabilia and historical displays and past pupils, former teachers and staff are being encouraged to get involved and share their memories. Former lollipop lady Elaine Kay is also compiling a book about the history of the schools.

Trust secretary Jill Leece said: “George Ellis was committed to investing in the education of children from poor families in the area 300 years ago and his legacy has survived to this day.

“As recently as 2007 the Ellis Trust made a substantial contribution to the building of the new school at Hemingfield.”

The summer fair will run from 11am until 2pm and feature Maypole dancing, the unveiling of a memorial plaque, more entertainment from the children, historical displays, stalls, games and refreshments.
