Event - Mine explosion remembered (Sheffield)

A COLLIERY explosion which killed six Sheffield miners 150 years ago will be remembered in a special event.

Volunteers are staging a day of sword dancing and activities – including drama, re-enactments and displays – to mark the milestone anniversary of the disaster at Westwood Colliery, High Green.

High Green Primary School and many community groups are taking part in the commemoration with support from Ecclesfield Parish Council and Sheffield Council’s Northern Community Assembly.

It takes place on Saturday , from 1pm, in the Miners’ Welfare Hall, Angram Road, High Green.

The project has been paid for with funding from the East Peak Industrial Heritage Support Programme and the community assembly.
