Event - Vehicle rally revives family rivalry (Wentworth Castle-Wentworth Woodhouse)

STORIES of competition between two South Yorkshire country seats have inspired vintage motoring enthusiasts to run a rally between the two estates.

Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham and Wentworth Castle in Barnsley were both owned by members of the Wentworth family – who continually strove to outdo each other with their architectural projects and were known as bitter rivals.

On Sunday, the Wentworth Rivals Car Rally will see 100 vehicles travel from Wentworth Woodhouse to arrive at Wentworth Castle Gardens from about 10.30am. They will then be on view until 4pm.

Organiser April Ross said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that so many classic vehicle owners have signed up for this new spin on our traditional car rally.”

Apart from a large selection of Austin cars, visitors can expect to see Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Wolsley, Rover, MG, Rolls Royce, Morris Minor, Ford and not to forget tractors, engines and motor bikes such as BSA, Triumph and Yamahas.

And, if the sound of roaring engines is not enough, Castle managers say the 18-piece big band Room 21 will be playing on the south lawn during the day too.
