IT’S not the most obvious place to spend a summer day but Sheffield General Cemetery is awash with flora and fauna, as a historical tour this Sunday will reveal.
You can take in the background, monuments and landscape and learn of its most interesting occupants, including missionary George Bennett and chartist martyr Samuel Holberry.
As well as being the principal burial ground in Victorian Sheffield the cemetery contains nine listed buildings and in 1999 was added to the national Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Meet at 2pm at the Gatehouse at the end of Cemetery Avenue (off Ecclesall Road, Café Rouge corner). The tour is free but donations are welcome.
