News - School’s cash grant celebration (Goldthorpe/Bolton/Thurnscoe)

A DEARNE school has won its bid for £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund - and the whole community will benefit!

The grant to the Dearne ALC (Adult Learning Centre) will be shared among local schools, within a whole range of projects.

All kinds of educational opportunities will be made possible by the money, as staff from the Dearne ALC work with partner organisations and the community on a varied programme.

These will include visits to the National Mining Museum, working with sculptors at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and family cooking sessions using Edwardian recipes passed down through generations of a local family.

Pupils and villagers of all ages will work together, to build up a history and culture of Goldthorpe, Bolton and Thurnscoe.

Senior members of the community will create Rag Rugs with pupils, depicting historical events from the area, and these will be displayed in community buildings.

Principal Neil Clark said: “At the end of the project we will have produced a heritage trail to record our valuable history for generations to come and have lasting memorials to our heritage in the town centre of Goldthorpe”.

And he described how the community will have the chance to work together by designing an ornate sculpture, demonstrating the area’s history, with colourful street banners and six large granite paving slabs around the village.

A new website is a further plan - to celebrate and archive the area’s heritage.

A launch evening for the project will take place on October 19, to be opened by the Mayor of Barnsley.

The submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund was entitled ‘The Dearne ALC Your Heritage Grant – Past and Present Futures’.

Peter Shaw, Assistant Principal at Dearne ALC added: “Our Past and Futures Together grant will enable us to share a common goal and create permanent legacies in Goldthorpe and the surrounding towns, and bring together students and people from all ages and walks of life.’

The programme will be launched officially at The Dearne ALC on the evening of October 19.
