News - Bid to reopen lost railway leads to talk (Woodhead Route/Glossop)

CAMPAIGNERS lobbying to reopen the disused Woodhead railway line through the Peak District are holding a talk on the history of the route next Thursday.
The free talk at Glossop Labour Club in Chapel Street, Glossop, from 7.30pm will be led by John Quick of the Great Central Railway Society.
The line linked Sheffield with Manchester through a tunnel under the Pennines but closed to rail traffic in 1981.
Accompanied by a slide show, John will tell the story of the route’s development, from its 19th century beginnings to its later decline.
The talk is the first in a series of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the line’s closure.
