Talk - The Life and Times of Queen Victoria By Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

Pat returns to give a talk on the life of one of Britain’s most renown monarchs. The talk will delve into the early years of Victoria’s life explaining how she became Queen. The talk will also delves into Victoria’s relationship with Prince Albert and how she interacted with the other European monarchies.

Talk - Worksop and District History in Pictures (Worksop)

Our secretary, Pam Cook will be giving a talk on the local places of interest around Worksop.

Talk: The History of English Law (Worksop)

Priories Historical Society's own Mike Langley gives a whirlwind tour of the evolution of the English legal system from pre-Anglo-Saxon times to the present day.

With some curious and interesting facts along the way -such as what did the term to be "hung, drawn and quartered" really mean, the true story of "Sweet Fanny Adams" and the man who beat the hangman's rope- "three times Lucky Lee".

Talk: Tudor & Stuart Sheffield by David Templeman at Worksop

Talk by David Templeman of Sheffield Manor Lodge on the environs of Sheffield during the 16th and 17th century before the small rural town became the Steel City.

Event - Anglo-Saxon & Norman Architecture (Worksop)

Pat McLaughlin returns to the Innings Public House in Worksop on 4th September to give a talk on  Anglo-Saxon and Norman architecture in the local area such as churches and castles

Talk starts at 7.30 pm. £3 entry fee. Bar open as normal.

Event - Explore the history of Sherwood Forest at town pub (Worksop)

The mystery and historical significance of Sherwood Forest will be the topic of conversation at The Innings pub in Worksop next week when Professor Ian D . Rotherham presents his illustrated lecture Sherwood Forest & The Dukeries - A Companion to the Land of Robin Hood.

The talk is part of a meeting for the Priory Historical Society, but all are welcome to hear Prof Rotherham’s presentation, which is based on his own book of the same title.

“Sherwood Forest is arguably the most famous historic landscape in the world, immortalised through storytelling, mythology, romantic books, and ultimately by Hollywood,” said Prof Rotherham.

“This is the setting for Robin Hood, Little John and the rest of the Merry Men.”

“Yet behind the glamorous legends are equally fascinating places, people and histories.

“After the break-up of the Royal Hunting Forest came the famous establishment of great halls, houses and parks for the aristocracy, the so-called Dukeries, and then industry, with deep coal mining, wartime military training, and 20th Century forestry.”

“From the 19th Century onwards, the region was a notable tourism, which continues today as visitors from around the world come to experience the forest’s nature, history and myth.

Copies of the book will be on sale on the night, which takes place next Thursday (5th June) at 7.30pm.

Talk - Green Men, Gargoyles and Other Fanciful Creatures by Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

Event - FOLK TALES OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE (Worksop)

FOLK TALES OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE – Pete Castle. Author and Folk Singer.

Passed from generation to generation, Nottinghamshire’s folk tales have been gathered by Pete Castle, author, into a book. It includes outlaws and of course Robin Hood; the clever Men of Gotham; witches, ghosts and vampires as well as noble lords and thwarted lovers. A new speaker for the Society but an unusual subject and well worth a visit!

Event - Segelocum (Worksop)

The next Priories Historical Society meeting is on Thursday September 5th at 19.30 - a talk on the Roman town of Segelocum by Emily Gillott of Nottinghamshire County Council's Community Archaeology team.

Come and hear of the historical settlement of Segelocum on the river Trent, now more commonly known as Littleborough, the town was one of the biggest in Roman Nottinghamshire

Event - CBA Festival of Archaeology (Worksop)

Priories Historical Society are pleased to announce a history event taking place at Worksop Library on Memorial Avenue on 13-14th July as part of the CBA Festival of Archaeology.

Several of the areas local history societies will be attending as well as Worksop Civic Society.  There will be an exhibition on Worksop's early history as well as finds from previous excavations.

The event will be open between 09.30-16.00 on Saturday and between 12.00-15.30 on Sunday.

Save Worksop Tourist Information Centre

Despite the decision to Close Worksop Tourist Information Centre in 2005 was overturned Bassetlaw District Council are at it again! This time the excuse of saving money has been put forward as the reason (anyone else noticed the not so cheap village signs that have popped up recently?). The reason less people are visiting is that it is hidden away now from the general gaze of people since the library moved. A new town centre location should be found and the TIC promoted.

We lost Worksop Museum several years ago and the council have done nothing for the Towns history - Soon tourists will have no face to face contact with people who can guide them around the areas best visitors spots.

a petition is available in the TIC in the Old Library on Memorial Avenue - please sign it to keep Worksop from finally becoming the back end of nowhere.

Talk - Raymoth Lane Excavation (Worksop)

Tickets are now available for the talk on Worksop's Raymoth Lane excavation from 2004. This was the last large scale dig in Worksop and due to estimated attendance it will be a ticket only event.

The talk takes place on Thursday 2nd May starting at 7.30pm at the BCVS Old Abbey School building next to the Priory Church, Priorswell Road, Worksop, S80 2BU.

Event - CBA Festival of Archaeology 2013 (Worksop)

This year’s CBA Festival of Archaeology takes place between Saturday 13th and Sunday 28 July 2013 and marks the 22nd year of this event. 

The events are listed on their website at http://festival.britarch.ac.uk/whatson and as usual the Priories Historical Society will be getting involved. We'll keep you updated with our plans as we arrange the venue and details on our exhibition as soon as we've figured out what we're going to do (some work is currently under way). Our past two events in Worksop Library in 2011 and Radford Priory in 2012 were well attended and we hope to expand the displays this year.

Event - Lady Arbella Stewart – The Queen That Never Was (Worksop)

David Templeman from the Manor House in Sheffield returns to Worksop to give a fascinating talk on Lady Arbella Stewart, Englands ‘lost queen’. Follow her life, the plot to overthrow James I and her final days in the Tower of London.

Event - A Glossary & Guide to Ancestral Ailments (Worksop)

Tonights talk (07/02) is by Joan Grundy.  Based on her book Joan’s ABC glossary of the ailments of yesteryear is a layman’s guide to the terminology used on death certificates, burial books, parish registers etc. She describes the cause of sicknesses, their symptoms and possible outcome. However, are we becoming complacent about diseases that could still, so easily, re-appear? The last case of Black Death was in Glasgow in the 1900s!

“Segelocum…grains of history”
The modesty of the small hamlet of Littleborough belies its grander Roman past when it was the eminent town of Segelocum. Community Archaeologists draw upon their research and archaeological work in this area to give us a fascinating glimpse of Roman life. They will also be bringing finds from the area including Roman sherds of pottery.

News - Chesterfield Canal lock gate relaunch (Worksop)

AN IMPORTANT lock on a canal running south of Sheffield has been reopened after work to correct problems caused by ground movement.

Changes including subsidence are believed to have caused the walls at Stret Lock, on Chesterfield Canal, to narrow slightly, so boats got stuck.

Rod Auton, of Chesterfield Canal Trust, said: “The Canal and River Trust, which manages the eastern section of the canal, started a widening scheme last October last year.

“It involved taking down two of the of the outer brick courses on the towpath side and replacing them with one course, increasing the width by 50mm. There was an open day in November at which about 250 people went down inside the lock to inspect the works.

“The final welding was done on the paddle gear last week. The same day, our trust’s historic boat, Python, approached. This boat had previously got stuck every time it tried to get through the lock, in Worksop. This time it went like a dream, slipping in and out perfectly.

“It might only be two inches of extra room, but it will make all the difference for full sized boats.”
