Events - Friends of Thynghowe (Birklands/Mansfield)

The Friends of Thynghowe are now ready to take bookings for the first events in their exciting new project 'Thynghowe and the forgotten heritage of Sherwood' funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

They hope that lots of you will be able to join them in discovering more about the past of Thynghowe and the Forest of Birklands, learning new skills and having a good time along the way!

The first 3 events are -
Introductory Workshop at Sherwood Pines on Saturday 14th April
The Friends of Thynghowe Annual Perambulation Walk in Birklands Forest on Saturday 21st April
Archive Research Workshop at Mansfield Library on Thursday 17th May 2012, repeated on Sunday 20th May 2012

Booking is essential for all of these events and places may be limited. The Greenwood Community Forest team are organising the booking.  You can reserve your place on greenwood@nottscc.gov.uk or  by phone on 0115 969 6518 or 01623 827326.

All of these events are free.

Young people under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. If you have difficulties with mobility, transport or getting away from family responsibilities get in touch with Greenwood as they may be able to help.

Luddite Bicentenary - Sheffield Anarchists Bookfair: Luddites Organising Forum

The talk was advertised with the following blurb:

From 1811 to 1813, thousands of textile workers in Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lancashire rose up against the mill owners, by smashing the power looms which were throwing them into unemployment and starvation. In 2011, anarchists, labour organisers and green activists will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Luddite rebellion and planning resistance to the new industrial revolution we see today. This workshop will look at the expansion of corporate power through nanotechnology, biotechnology, surveillance, information and other technologies, and at how we can resist these developments in the spirit of our comrades 200 years ago.

Event - Chance to search through archives (Nottingham)

NOTTS Archives is to hold a series of new workshops and tours to help people find out more about the past.

Workshops will look at what records people can access, such as maps, plans and family, estate and hospital records.

Visitors can also get help deciphering difficult handwriting and old deeds.

On Wednesday, May 18, a session on maps and plans will be held.

Family and estate records will be looked at on Wednesday, June 15, and on Wednesday, July 20, non-conformist records – documents which relate to those who did not follow the Anglican religion – will be explored.

Councillor John Cottee said: "These are great opportunities to find out more about our rich archival heritage and how they can access it.

"There are so many important records held at Nottinghamshire Archives."

All sessions cost £3.50 and must be pre-booked by calling 0115 958 1634.

Community History Workshops at Worksop Library

Wednesday 8th December

10.00 - 11.30 / 13.30 - 15.00

Come along and find out how to add your own photos, documents and memories of the local area to our new Community History Website Our Nottinghamshire.

Please bring along your old photos/documents (e.g. your memories) to scan (or ideally ready saved on a memory stick) and we'll show you how to add them to the website.  In connection with the BBC Turn Back Time programme, focusing on the old High Street, we are especially interested in gathering information/memories/photos of old shops in the local area (can be anywhere in Nottinghamshire)
