Event - Art exhibition pays tribute to Yorkshire’s mining heritage (Barnsley)

PAINTINGS inspired by the coal industry have been gathered from around Yorkshire for an exhibition which opened in Barnsley at the weekend.

The group of 30 works, which date from 1800 to the present, have been put on display at Barnsley’s Cooper Gallery after being loaned from galleries in Leeds, Sheffield and Doncaster.

Some works have also been supplied by the National Coal Mining Museum and feature artists include John Sell Cotman, Frank Brangwyn, Graham Sutherland, Jacob Kramer and George Bissill.

A gallery spokesman said: “The exhibition looks at collieries in the landscape, working underground, figure studies and home life.

“As well as famous artists, some pictures by artists who were also miners are included.

“One of the star pictures is Pitmen at Play by Henry Perlee Parker – this was the first mining picture to be exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1836.”

Experience Barnsley, which runs the Cooper Gallery and is currently developing a new museum in the town hall, has also asked veterans of the glass and coal industry to bring objects and photographs to the Cooper Gallery, on Friday, May 20, Friday, May 27 and Friday, June 3 between 1pm and 4pm.

Pieces donated may be included in the new people’s museum, which is due to open next year.
