Event - Graveyard volunteers (Awsworth/Cossall)

Awsworth and Cossall History Society is looking for volunteers to help record details of graves at St Peter’s Churchyard.

The first stage of mapping the gravestones in the churchyard was done by Nottinghamshire County Council back in June.

The history society is now looking for people to help record specific detail, which will mainly involve ticking boxes on prepared forms.

The recording will take place the week beginning August 30. Anybody interested should ring June Morley on 0115 849 7385.

Event - Graveyard Surveys at Laneham

Notts CC Community Archaeologists are looking for volunteers to help with the  graveyard surveying days at St Peter’s church, Laneham.

Dates: Saturday 9 , Monday 11 and  Tuesday 12 July
Time: 10am to 3pm
Location: St Peter’s Church, Laneham

We are looking for more people to come along and take part in these surveys, and all training will be provided.

We will be recording information from headstones, as well as their condition. Headstones suffer badly through weathering, and over time the information inscribed on them can be lost. So surveys like this are very important for providing genealogical information, as well as providing a benchmark by which the rate of erosion of stones can be measured.

If you are interested in coming along or finding out more please contact Emily Gillott, Community Archaeologist, emily.gillott@nottscc.gov.uk  Tel: 0115 977 2160.

Event - Fun times at village fayre (Letwell)

One of South Yorkshire’s smallest country villages is ready for a big party this Saturday with free admission for everyone - and lots of family attractions on offer, from ferret racing to sword dancing and brass band music.

World Cup referee Howard Webb is the guest of honour at the annual Letwell Village Fayre, near Rotherham, which starts at 1.30pm.

Entertainment includes dray rides, maypole dancing, a living history display, an exhibition of farm machinery new and old, and a display of vintage double decker buses and military vehicles from the South Yorkshire Transport Museum.

Homemade teas will be served throughout the day in the village hall.

All the profits from the show will go towards the upkeep of Letwell’s medieval church, St Peter’s.
