Event - Fayre hosts horticulture and battle display (Sheffield)

SHEFFIELD’s Jubilee Fayre returns over the bank holiday weekend in Norfolk Heritage Park.


Thousands of people are expected for the event, which is being held on Sunday and Monday, from 10.30am until 5.30pm, with free admission. Among the attractions is the horticultural show, which includes a dedicated tent for homegrown flowers, vegetables, exhibitions of cacti and bonsai, as well as homemade jams, honey, wine and cakes.

This year also sees an Olympic-themed art competition, with gold medal inspired artwork to take centre stage. Anyone can enter any of the categories – visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/sheffieldfayre to find the entry booklet.

The fayre also boasts a massive battle re-enactment and living history camp, craft stalls and fairground sideshows.

The event will be visited by the Paralympic Torch on the Sunday.

Event - Sheffield & District Family History Fair

The annual Sheffield and District Family History Fair will take place on Saturday 21 April 2012 To be held at ‘Centre in the Park’, Norfolk Heritage Park, Guildford Avenue , Sheffield S2 2PL between 10.00 and 16.00. Many of the local & national family history societies will be attending and there will be many stalls selling genealogical publications, books, maps, CD’s, floppy discs & microfiche, computer software, free database searches and help desk facilities. Car parking is adjacent to Guildford Avenue Entrance and admission is free.

News - Battle to save show from spending cuts (Sheffield Fayre)

ORGANISERS of the Sheffield Fayre were reflecting this week on another successful event and big turnout – and keeping their fingers crossed over the future.

While one of the main attractions in Norfolk Heritage Park is always the re-enactment of battles through the ages, the impact of the financial struggles at the town hall is increasingly taking centre stage.

The council gives £25,000 towards the show, which is the biggest free event of its kind in the north of England, and was staged for the tenth time last Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

“Over the weekend, six different people came up to us asking about funding cuts,” said Erica Fidment, secretary of the Friends of Norfolk Heritage Park and the fayre committee.

“There are cuts everywhere and we get a lot of support from the council with the infrastructure and the budget.

“With it being the Jubilee (the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee) next year, we are hoping that funding will be available. But we just don’t know.

“Hopefully it will take place, and everybody is very positive, but there is no commitment at this stage. It’s on a side of town that needs a lot of support.”

Paul Billington, the council’s director of environment and culture, said : “The council recognises the value of Sheffield Fayre and other similar events in parks.

“As everyone knows, the council faces continuing budget challenges but no budget decisions have been made at this stage.

“The council will work closely with partner organisations, including event organisers, to look at all options for the future delivery of services and activities.”

The fayre has become a key date in Sheffield’s calendar, anchored by the historical re-enactments that see ‘soldiers’ from Roman times to World War Two camping in the park, a horticultural show, fairground and community stalls.

One of the most popular attractions this year was the sideshows of the University of Sheffield’s National Fairground Archive.

Last year’s event attracted around 25,000 visitors and it is thought more people came this year, despite uncertain weather.

Erica said: “It was absolutely fabulous. The first day is usually quiet but it was very busy. There were a lot of families. The re-enactments were as good as ever and the horticultural event was well attended. I was really happy about how it went.”

Worries about the weather and a loss of parking space because of the creation of football pitches turned out to be misplaced.

Christian Sprakes, a telesales worker from Doncaster who was with the American Civil War Society, said: “We do about six or seven major festivals every year and Sheffield is very good, because you get lots of different period groups here. Our members come from all across the country, from every walk of life.”

There will be the Through the Ages Living History show with reenactments and displays ranging from the Romans (Legio VIII Augusta MGV), to World War II (The Northern World War II Association,. The American Civil War will also be occurring with attendance from the American Civil War Society.

There will also be the annual Horitcultural Show, fair rides, craft tent and market stalls

Event - Sounds of battle at summer fair (Sheffield Fair)

PREPARATIONS are under way for an event which attracts 25,000 people to a Sheffield park for a series of traditional horticultural and family events

The Sheffield Fair celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and organisers said it was one of the largest free events in South Yorkshire.

Norfolk Heritage Park will again host the fair this year and a spokesman said its aim was to “increase people’s awareness of their cultural heritage”.

Attractions will include favourites like the Sheffield Horticultural Show and a large multi-period living history camp and battle re-enactment.

The horticultural show will have classes for a wide variety of plants but will also include culinary, craft, honey, wine, art and photography classes, with entries open to both adults and children.

This year the event will also include a display by the Sheffield and District Orchid Society, which was founded in 1972.
