Event - Get set for 27th outlaw festival (Edwinstowe)

THIS year's Robin Hood Festival, in Sherwood Forest, will run from Wednesday August 10 until Sunday August 14.

It is the 27th time the event has been staged by Notts County Council

Councillor John Cottee said: "The event is the perfect day out for all the family, with costumed characters at every turn, from jugglers and jesters to medieval doctors and rat-catchers, while medieval combat displays and markets stalls recreate the atmosphere of Robin's Sherwood Forest."

Jousting contests between Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham will take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons near the Edwinstowe cricket ground.

Visitors can also watch a falconry display on the Wednesday and Sunday.

Activities will run from 11am to 4pm each day.

Admission is free, with car parking at £5 a day. A small charge is made for some events.

News – Field Survey Study at Braithwell (Priories Historical Society)

Priories Historical Society took part in its first field survey at Braithwell, South Yorkshire on Sunday 27^th March.  The morning was very cold as I arrived, the sky was scattered with grey cloud which made the day look daunting but during the day the sky cleared leaving a beautiful blue sky.  The field was originally five fields over time these boundaries have been removed.  At least one of these boundaries seems to have been made from stone due to the change in soil colour and blocks of limestone present although this could have been a hedge and the limestone in this area might not have been cleared during field improvements.  

 

There were many finds during the day. The field is littered with bits of clay pipe throughout although there is a concentration to the northern hedge possibly indicating where the labourers rested and ate whilst working in the field.  Glass and modern pottery is also numerous so care was taken when inspecting shards. Roman finds were quite numerous in one section of the field so this will be inspected further on the next few visits.  This pottery comprised mainly greyware but other more exquisite pieces were also found.  The star find of the day was a Charles II farthing coin from 1674 (with the date below Britannia).  At some point livestock have been kept in the field as there are numerous bone fragments.

 

To be able to go on Field Surveying with the society you need to become a member which is a nominal amount of £5 per year (due in April), this also gets you £1 off meetings and free copies of the societies magazine.  There is also a Health & Safety document which needs to be signed.  If you wish to metal detect with us you will need to have approved Metal Detector Insurance (NCMD or FID) and have to be vetted by the committee before being allowed on-site.

 

News - Robin Hood and merry men gear up for festival (Edwinstowe)

ROBIN Hood will once again ride into Sherwood Forest for the biggest celebration in the world of the legendary outlaw.

The 27th annual Robin Hood Festival is held at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve and attracts fans and visitors from every corner of the globe.

The event features costumed characters at every turn, from jugglers and jesters to medieval doctors and rat catchers, whilst medieval combat displays and markets stalls recreate the atmosphere of Robin's Sherwood Forest.

The festival will take place over five days from Wednesday August 10 through to Sunday August 14 at Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre on Swinecote Road at Edwinstowe. Admission to the festival is free, with car parking costing £5 a day.

Councillor John Cottee, Cabinet Member for culture and community said: "We're excited about the plans for this year's Robin Hood Festival, not only is it great fun and a brilliant way to celebrate our local legend but gives a much needed boost to the local economy during these difficult financial times."

"Local shops, restaurants and hotels benefit from the increase of visitors to the county who come in search of the legend of Robin Hood.

"The event is popular with all age groups who enjoy the spectacle and activities in the beautiful setting of Sherwood Forest."

The event will be packed full of medieval festivities ideal for Robin Hood enthusiasts and for the whole family.

Cheer on Robin and his band of merry men during jousting contests with the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham which will take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

On the same afternoons watch falconry displays with majestic birds of prey sweeping through the ancient forest. As usual there will also be medieval market stalls close to the Major Oak, music and merriment at the visitor centre and costumed characters wandering the forest glades.
