Priories Historical Society Meetings 2016

Thursday 5^th May Professor Ian Rotherham talks on ‘Robin Hood – fact or myth’. Well-known author, broadcaster and expert on Sherwood Forest and Robin Hood deciphers the myth from reality from the medieval stories of Nottinghamshire’s best known outlaw.

Thursday 2^nd June Bassetlaw Museums Sam Glasswell talks on ‘Local Saxons and Vikings’. Sam is an eminent local authority on the area and talks about life after the Romans and the later settlement of the Vikings.

Thursday 7^th July Return of the nationally acclaimed folk singer Pete Castle plays and tells tales of traditional English folk songs in his ‘Heroes and Villains’ talk.

June 4th. Sam Glasswell of Bassetlaw Museum talks on how they put exhibits together and how they conserve artifacts and look after them

July 2nd. Pete Castle. Folklore expert and musician. Folklore lies or legends? How reliable are folk stories and legends? Are they tools for history and research. Talk with plenty of examples some local. Sometimes they are nonsense and sometimes nuggets of information which you don't get in proper history.

1895 - he opened the police station door to be faced with a completely naked, except for a pair of socks, Henry Wright! His throat cut and a child in his arms on fire! The rest of the family were already dead. Did Henry Wright kill them all - you decide after hearing the evidence.

Talk - The Life and Times of Queen Victoria By Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

Pat returns to give a talk on the life of one of Britain’s most renown monarchs. The talk will delve into the early years of Victoria’s life explaining how she became Queen. The talk will also delves into Victoria’s relationship with Prince Albert and how she interacted with the other European monarchies.

Our secretary, Pam Cook will be giving a talk on the local places of interest around Worksop.

Talk: The History of English Law (Worksop)

Priories Historical Society's own Mike Langley gives a whirlwind tour of the evolution of the English legal system from pre-Anglo-Saxon times to the present day.

With some curious and interesting facts along the way -such as what did the term to be "hung, drawn and quartered" really mean, the true story of "Sweet Fanny Adams" and the man who beat the hangman's rope- "three times Lucky Lee".

Talk: Tudor & Stuart Sheffield by David Templeman at Worksop

Talk by David Templeman of Sheffield Manor Lodge on the environs of Sheffield during the 16th and 17th century before the small rural town became the Steel City.

Event - Anglo-Saxon & Norman Architecture (Worksop)

Pat McLaughlin returns to the Innings Public House in Worksop on 4th September to give a talk on  Anglo-Saxon and Norman architecture in the local area such as churches and castles

Talk starts at 7.30 pm. £3 entry fee. Bar open as normal.

Event - Explore the history of Sherwood Forest at town pub (Worksop)

The mystery and historical significance of Sherwood Forest will be the topic of conversation at The Innings pub in Worksop next week when Professor Ian D . Rotherham presents his illustrated lecture Sherwood Forest & The Dukeries - A Companion to the Land of Robin Hood.

The talk is part of a meeting for the Priory Historical Society, but all are welcome to hear Prof Rotherham’s presentation, which is based on his own book of the same title.

“Sherwood Forest is arguably the most famous historic landscape in the world, immortalised through storytelling, mythology, romantic books, and ultimately by Hollywood,” said Prof Rotherham.

“This is the setting for Robin Hood, Little John and the rest of the Merry Men.”

“Yet behind the glamorous legends are equally fascinating places, people and histories.

“After the break-up of the Royal Hunting Forest came the famous establishment of great halls, houses and parks for the aristocracy, the so-called Dukeries, and then industry, with deep coal mining, wartime military training, and 20th Century forestry.”

“From the 19th Century onwards, the region was a notable tourism, which continues today as visitors from around the world come to experience the forest’s nature, history and myth.

Copies of the book will be on sale on the night, which takes place next Thursday (5th June) at 7.30pm.

CONTRACEPTION THROUGH THE AGES by Joan Grundy

This entertaining talk dispels any notion that 20^th century invention. The Greeks, Arabs, Egyptians all used differing – if highly unreliable – methods but some of these led the way for today's modern methods. Hear how Britain lagged behind the rest of the world in discussing contraception and about the pioneering work of Marie Stopes in the 1920s.

FOOTPADS, KINGS & HIGHWAYMEN by Ian Morgan, Author

Sherwood Forest is the most famous historic landmark in world, immortalized through storytelling, mythology and romantic books and ultimately by Hollywood. This is the setting for Robin Hood, Little John, and the rest of the Merry Men. Yet beyond the glamorous legends are equally fascinating places, people and histories. An important and vast medieval forest and extensive heath. Great halls, houses and parks of the aristocracy the so-called Dukery. Then industry, wartime training, and forestry. Richly illustrated with images from the past: photographs, postcards, paintings and antique prints.

Gives some idea of how Worksop would have been. The 16^th and 17^th century roots when Sheffield was a small rural town. Talk looks at how the ordinary people lived, worked and played, its surviving buildings from that period and unfortunately the last ones to be demolished, plus how the cutlery industry developed over the centuries.

Talk - Green Men, Gargoyles and Other Fanciful Creatures by Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

Why were Christians putting pagan figures in their churches and what were they for? What is a sheilanagig? Pat is a well know speaker and expert on churches and comes to explain all.

FOLK TALES OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE – Pete Castle. Author and Folk Singer.

Passed from generation to generation, Nottinghamshire’s folk tales have been gathered by Pete Castle, author, into a book. It includes outlaws and of course Robin Hood; the clever Men of Gotham; witches, ghosts and vampires as well as noble lords and thwarted lovers. A new speaker for the Society but an unusual subject and well worth a visit!

Event - Segelocum (Worksop)

The next Priories Historical Society meeting is on Thursday September 5th at 19.30 - a talk on the Roman town of Segelocum by Emily Gillott of Nottinghamshire County Council's Community Archaeology team.

Come and hear of the historical settlement of Segelocum on the river Trent, now more commonly known as Littleborough, the town was one of the biggest in Roman Nottinghamshire

Event - The Curious World of Olde time Punishments (Worksop)

Ian Morgan comes to talk to the Priories Historical Society on old criminal punishments on July 4th.  From birching to branding and beheading. 

Listen to stories of ducking stools and witches, the pillory and perjurers. How do you punish the dead, or a horse and cart, or a train? What is a deodand or a Newcastle cloak? And what about the Branks or the Hand of Glory.

Event - CBA Festival of Archaeology (Worksop)

Priories Historical Society are pleased to announce a history event taking place at Worksop Library on Memorial Avenue on 13-14th July as part of the CBA Festival of Archaeology.

Several of the areas local history societies will be attending as well as Worksop Civic Society.  There will be an exhibition on Worksop's early history as well as finds from previous excavations.

The event will be open between 09.30-16.00 on Saturday and between 12.00-15.30 on Sunday.

Event - Tickhill Castle Open Day

Tickhill Castle will be open this Sunday 11th June between 2pm and 5pm

Not sure if there is an entrance fee but it's well worth a visit and the weather should be lovely.

Event - Great Houses and Halls (Worksop)

 Pat McLaughlin, one of the areas greatest experts on churches and mansions gives an illustrated talk on the local halls, manors and great houses. Come and discover the facts on our local areas surviving and long gone palatial pads, who owned them and some interesting facts.

Event - Masterplan for Castlegate (Sheffield)

This Its in the Friday and Saturday 17th/18th May Sheffield City Council will be putting on a display on its proposal to investigate the remains of Sheffield Castle from 10/11am onwards.
