The talk starts at 7.30pm on Thursday 4th December at the Innings public house, Prospect, Worksop S81 0RS. Entry is only £3 and there will be a bar on. There is also a large free car park outside.

Talk - Green Men, Gargoyles and Other Fanciful Creatures by Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

FOLK TALES OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE – Pete Castle. Author and Folk Singer.

Passed from generation to generation, Nottinghamshire’s folk tales have been gathered by Pete Castle, author, into a book. It includes outlaws and of course Robin Hood; the clever Men of Gotham; witches, ghosts and vampires as well as noble lords and thwarted lovers. A new speaker for the Society but an unusual subject and well worth a visit!

Event - Local Finds and Their Preservation (Worksop)

The next Priories Historical society talk takes place on Thursday March 7th.  Sam Glasswell from the Bassetlaw Museum in Retford comes to talk about artefacts found in our local area and the techniques used to keep them in good condition.

The talk starts at 7.30pm at the BCVS Old Abbey School building next to the Worksop Priory (S80 2BU). Entrance is still only £3 (or £2 for members) Free tea/coffee and biscuits are provided at each meeting. Membership remains the same at only £5 per year.

Event - A Glossary & Guide to Ancestral Ailments (Worksop)

Tonights talk (07/02) is by Joan Grundy.  Based on her book Joan’s ABC glossary of the ailments of yesteryear is a layman’s guide to the terminology used on death certificates, burial books, parish registers etc. She describes the cause of sicknesses, their symptoms and possible outcome. However, are we becoming complacent about diseases that could still, so easily, re-appear? The last case of Black Death was in Glasgow in the 1900s!

News - Yorkshire King "should be buried in Worksop"

Remains that could belong to King Richard the third should be laid to rest in Worksop, an MP claimed today.


Tests are being carried out to see if a male skeleton, that was discovered in a Leicester car park last month, belongs to the "Yorkshire King" who lived in Middleham Castle in North Yorkshire

The infamous monarch, who murdered his nephews to take the throne, was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. He was taken to Leicester where he was buried at the church of the Franciscan Friary, known as the Greyfriars. But his actual whereabouts became lost over time.

There have been calls to bury the monarch at York Minster. But today in the Commons, Bassetlaw MP John Mann said Worksop should become the King's final resting place.

“The great priory of Worksop, halfway between [Leicester and York], the end of the road of the forest and the centre of the kingdom of Richard III can provide the most appropriate final resting place for the king.

Event - Guided tour of Worksop Priory Gatehouse

There will be free guided tours of Worksop Priory gatehouse today at 2pm and 4pm as part of the Archaeology Weekend hosted by the Priories Historical Society at the Priory for this years CBA Festival of British Archaeology.

Event - CBA Festival of British Archaeology (Worksop)

Between Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd July the Priories Historical Society will be holding an Archaeology Weekend at Worksop Priory as part of the CBA Festival of British Archaeology.

There will be guided tours on Saturday at 11.00, 14.00 and 16.00 and on Sunday at 14.00 and 16.00.  There will also be a book sale, refreshments and a rare chance to go inside the Priory Gatehouse.

The Priory will be open between 10.00 and 17.00 on Friday and Saturday and after Sunday Service between 11.30 and 17.00.

Event - Worksop Priory launch ‘appeal for renewal’

THE ICONIC Worksop Priory has launched an appeal for renewal to carry out some ‘much needed maintenance’ work.


The Worksop Priory Church of Our Lady and St Cuthbert in the town centre is looking to raise over £450,000 for a new heating system, in order to ‘meet the demands of the 21st Century’.

A church spokesman said: “The Priory Church is the most historically significant building in the area and has been serving the needs of the people of Worksop for over 900 years.”

“Since time immemorial, the good folk of Worksop have had only one grumble - that it’s too cold.”

He continued: “We have now taken the decision to explore renewable energy, couple with new unobtrusive underfloor heating as the best way to provide for the needs of the church.”

To help raise money, the church will be providing guided tours of the grounds, gatehouse and monastery site on 22nd June. Pimms and Canapes will also be served.

News - Worksop Civic Society Launch

Worksop Civic Society was formally launched today at the Priory Gatehouse. 

The launch was opened by Worksop's present Mayor; Counsellor David Challinor and hosted by Civic Voice's Ian Harvey who spoke on his thoughts of the town and how beautiful the town was, guests were invited to speak on the good and bad points of our community and how we wish to make the town more pleasant. 

Interim Chairman Chris Burton also spoke on how pleased the society was on such a huge turnout and how we can shape the future of our historic town.

Event - North Nottinghamshire Priory Churches (Oldcotes)

The first talk of 2012 for the Priories Historical Society takes place on 13th February when Pat McLaughlan returns to give a fascinating talk on North Nottinghamshire's Priory Churches.
