Talk - The Life and Times of Queen Victoria By Pat McLaughlin (Worksop)

Pat returns to give a talk on the life of one of Britain’s most renown monarchs. The talk will delve into the early years of Victoria’s life explaining how she became Queen. The talk will also delves into Victoria’s relationship with Prince Albert and how she interacted with the other European monarchies.


The talk starts at 7.30pm on Thursday 5th February at the Innings Public House, Prospect, Worksop S81 0RS. Entry is only £3 and there will be a bar on. There is also a large free car park outside.

Event - Anglo-Saxon & Norman Architecture (Worksop)

Pat McLaughlin returns to the Innings Public House in Worksop on 4th September to give a talk on  Anglo-Saxon and Norman architecture in the local area such as churches and castles

Talk starts at 7.30 pm. £3 entry fee. Bar open as normal.

The next Priories Historical Society meeting is on Thursday February 6th  2014 at the BCVS, next to Worksop Priory on Priorswell Road, Worksop starting at 7.30pm

Why were Christians putting pagan figures in their churches and what were they for? What is a sheilanagig? Pat is a well know speaker and expert on churches and comes to explain all.

 Pat McLaughlin, one of the areas greatest experts on churches and mansions gives an illustrated talk on the local halls, manors and great houses. Come and discover the facts on our local areas surviving and long gone palatial pads, who owned them and some interesting facts.

March 7th – Local Finds and Their Preservation
Sam Glasswell from the Bassetlaw Museum in Retford comes to talk about what has been found in our local area and the techniques used to keep them in good condition.

April 4th – Lady Arbella Stewart – The Queen That Never Was
A fascinating talk by David Templeman from the Manor House in Sheffield on Lady Arbella Stewart, Englands ‘lost queen’. Follow her life, the plot to overthrow James I and her final days in the Tower of London.

May 2nd - Raymoth Lane Excavation
Pam Cook talks to the society about the last large scale excavation to take place in Worksop. Discover the Romano-British history of the area around Gateford and what discoveries were made during the dig in 2003 and 2004. (Due to the expected attendance levels this will be a ticket only event).

Event - History set to come alive in Rotherham

Rotherham’s newly restored Boston Castle is set to come to life.


Local historian, Pat McLaughlin, will be at the castle on Friday, talking on the topic of 'South Yorkshire 's Castles'.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Cllr Amy Rushforth, said: "Now that Boston Castle has been restored to its formed glory what better place to hold an intriguing and informative talk on the subject of our local castles.

"Boston Castle is steeped in history, its architecture and story are second to none. Pat is sure to bring the past to life and weave a fascinating journey around an absolutely fascinating topic."
