Community Archaeology - Graveyard Surveys - Cromwell

Nottinghamshire County Councils Community Archaeology team have organised another graveyard survey at Cromwell. They will be out at the graveyard between 10 am and 2.30 pm, on the 19th and 20th November.

For those of you who haven't done graveyard survey before, it involves recording the text on gravestones, as well as their condition. It's very satisfying, and is really great information to help people who are researching their family history.

Toilets are available in the neighbouring village, inside Norwell church. There's also a coffee shop in Cromwell itself at the services by the A1. Some people like to bring a camping stool or blanket to sit on while recording the stones.

For further information please call the team on Tel: 0115 9696 525/Mob: 07917 212 554  or visit the website at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/communityarchaeology

Community Archaeology - Norwell Graveyard Survey (Notts)

On Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd May Nottinghamshire County Councils Community Archaeology team will be returning to Norwell churchyard to continue with the survey of the gravestones there. The survey involves recording the inscriptions on the gravestones as well as their condition and decoration. No experience is necessary as they will take you through the process.

They will be there between 10am and 3pm both days. There is a toilet at the church but you are advised to bring you own lunch and wear suitable clothing appropriate to the weather. You might also like to bring a folding stool, kneeling mat, or picnic blanket if you have one, as you will probably end up sitting on the grass in order to read the inscriptions. The road by the church is also quite narrow, so please ensure that you park sensibly and respectfully, allowing ample space for farm machinery to pass. This may mean you have to park a little further up the road into the village.

If you'd like to come along please contact Emily at community.archaeology@nottscc.gov.uk to let her have an idea of numbers.

In addition, they can offer limited lifts from Trent Bridge House, West Bridgford, leaving at 9am. If this is of interest to you please get in touch. Spaces are on a first-come-first served basis.

Community archaeology - Geophsics at Willoughby Deserted Village near Norwell

Nottinghamshire Community Archaeology are running a geophysical survey training week at Willoughby Deserted Medieval Village (DMV) by Norwell, from the 27th of February to the 2nd March- there is a possibility of Saturday the 3rd of March, but that will be confirmed one way or the other shortly.

Please get in touch with them if you wish to attend any of the days mentioned. Places are fairly limited due to the amount equipment- so booking is essential.

The training is the first session in fieldwork being offered as part of the Community Archaeology handbook, so people attending would be encouraged to share their experiences with us in some way so that we can begin work on that chapter.

The survey is being undertaken by Peter Masters of Cranfield University. As well as leading the survey he will be contributing the professional’s element of the chapter.

This is a great opportunity to gain an insight into using the equipment, the logistics of fieldwork and the standards and guidance of the profession- as well as being immense fun!!!

The geophysics follows on from the topographic survey undertaken by the Community Archaeologists a few years ago:

and it will hopefully provide us with some answers – and further questions regarding this fascinating site.

The site is located a few miles north of the village of Norwell on the side of the road to Carlton on Trent.

More information when you book a place.

Many other opportunities to get involved will also be coming soon with survey training, test-pitting, field walking and excavation all planned for the next few months.

Please let them know if you wish to attend the geophysics in February.
