Collections are about to take place in
libraries in Nottinghamshire for photographs capturing Jubilee celebrations
from yesteryear.
Two local libraries are hosting events
where people can bring old photographs to be scanned and will then feature in
Nottinghamshire County Council’s Right Royal Extravaganza exhibition at
Rufford Gallery in May.
Experts from the Picture the Past
project, who manage an on-line collection of more than 90,000 historic images
in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, are also taking part in the initiative and
will be on hand to professionally scan old pictures and slides brought in by
members of the public alongside staff from Nottinghamshire County
Council’s library service.
The drop-in sessions are at Mansfield
Library, Wednesday 14th March, 10am - 1pm and Southwell Library, Tuesday 20th
March 10am - 1pm
‘Picture the Past’ is a
not-for-profit project, started in 2002, that aims to make historic images from
the library and museum collections across the whole of Derby, Derbyshire,
Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, available via a completely free-to-use website.
There are photographs, postcards,
engravings and paintings on the website showing how life has changed in the
region over the last few hundred years giving a fascinating insight into the
work and lives of the people who lived there.
One of Picture the Past’s project
managers, Nick Tomlinson, said: “We are delighted to get involved in this
initiative and it will be fascinating to see the sorts of pictures that members
of the public bring along.”
Tim Warner, one of the library
service’s Local Studies Librarians, will be involved in the project at
Southwell Library and said: “We’re looking for old photographs and
memories of how local residents celebrated royal events in the local area in
days gone by.
“Anything that captures the 1952
Coronation, the Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee, street parties, carnivals
and parades will all be welcome.”
Rufford’s Right Royal Extravaganza
takes place at Rufford Craft Centre from Tuesday 15 May to Sunday 10 June.
There is also a preview on Sunday 13 May, 2pm – 4pm.
Exhibition organisers including Sue
Cullen and Diana Pasek-Atkinson, from Nottinghamshire County Council’s
arts service, are also appealing for unusual memorabilia from the Queen’s
Coronation, Silver and Golden Jubilees which will adorn the gallery along with
hand-made bunting and ceramics celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

opportunities for people to get involved in the fun with workshops to make
bunting, ceramics and tiaras in April.
At the Exhibition’s preview on
Sunday, 13th Ma, from 2-4pm, visitors are invited to adorn themselves in red,
white and blue (jewels optional) throw on your crown and join us for an
afternoon fit for a Queen! Pretenders to the throne sporting creative crowns
are particularly welcome!
