Events - Designed to Shine exhibition (Sheffield)

One hundred years ago stainless steel was discovered in Sheffield by Harry Brearley.

This development revolutionised the modern world and shaped Sheffield into the city we know today.

To mark 100 of Stainless Steel in Sheffield, partners from across the city are collaborating on a programme of exhibitions and events.

A new exhibition, Designed to Shine, opens at the Millennium Gallery on Saturday, February 16.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Freshgate Trust Foundation and explores a century of design and innovation using stainless steel.

Events - City celebrates 100 years of Sheffield steel

IT’S nearly 100 years since the discovery that changed the city and the world forever.


Next year marks the centenary of stainless steel and Sheffield is planning a year-long party to celebrate.

Unveiling the plans at the Millennium Gallery this morning, Master Cutler Neil MacDonald said events would cover, not just Harry Brearley’s discovery in a Brown Firth laboratory, but also the entrepreneurial spirit which saw him realise its huge potential.

“It’s a chance to blow our own trumpet and tell everyone about it,” said Neil.

‘Design To Shine’, an exhibition of stainless objects opens in the Millennium Gallery in February 2013. Kelham Island Museum will host ‘Rustless’ the Harry Brearley Story and the Cutlers Hall is having an open day on March 23.

There will also be a Women of Steel Concert, a David Mellor exhibition and a host of industry visits and tours. Meanwhile Sheffield Newspapers is producing a coffee table book.

Kim Streets, chief executive of Museums Sheffield, said she hoped the celebrations would inspire young people.

Article - Stainless Steel, 100 years old but who invented it? (Sheffield)

A common answer to the question of who invented stainless steel is usually “Harry Brearley” from Sheffield , in reality the answer to this question regarding stainless steel may not be so clear cut, even though its now officially 100 years old.


Firstly when we discuss this it is important to note that the term “inventor” is very loose, what is it we define as an “inventor”? Is it the person who first thought of the idea, the person who first documented the idea, the person who got the patent for the idea or even the person who produced the idea?

Secondly the actual name “stainless steel” wasn’t actually defined until 1911 and prior to this there was chromium-iron alloys which didn’t meet the minimum requirement of 10.5% chromium but they still held some level of corrosion resistance and so this is hard to just simply push to one side.

There have been many of people from various of countries who have claimed to be the inventor of stainless steel however; the argument was set into motion when Stoddard and Farraday who were two Englishmen and then Pierre Berthier noticed in 1821 that iron-chromium alloys were more resistant to attack.

Tests were then carried out on low chromium alloys and then higher chromium alloys were attempted to be produced but at this initial stage the importance of low carbon content wasn’t understand and thus production failed.

In 1872 when Woods and Clark filed for a patent of an acid and weather resistant allow which contained 30-35% chromium and 2% tungsten. This would be the first ever patent on what is now considered stainless steel.

It was 1875 when Frenchman, Brustlein detailed the importance of low carbon content being a key factor in the successful creation of stainless steel. He said that in order to create an alloy with a high percentage of chromium the carbon content needs to remain below 0.15%.

Twenty years later as scientists attempted to develop stainless steel and they tried creating low carbon stainless steel but no attempts were successful. But it was in 1895 when Hans Goldschmidt of Germany then developed the aluminothermic reduction process which would produce carbon-free chromium and it was at this point when stainless steel became a reality.

In 1904 Leon Guillet carried out extensive research on iron-chromium allows and thus he came up with compositions of what is now known as 410, 420, 442, 446 and 440-c. following this in 1906 he then analysed iron-nickel-chrome alloys which provided the basis for the properties 300 series stainless steels which we have today. He never documented the potential corrosion of the above materials.

In 1911, the importance of minimum chromium content was discovered by Monnartz and Borchers. They noted the correlation and relationship between chromium content and corrosion resistance and thus produced detailed works on this.

In 1871 this was when Harry Brearley was introduced; in 1912 he was given the task of prolonging the life of gun barrels which were eroding too quickly. He was on a mission to find erosion resistant steel and not a corrosion resistant one; he experimented with steel alloys containing chromium.

On the 13th August 1913 Harry created a steel with 12.8% chromium and 0.24% carbon it is this which has been argued to be the first ever stainless steel. There are a number of myths which have since arisen concerning Harry’s tests against corrosion however in reality he had to etch his steels with nitric acid and then examine them using a microscope.

Their resistance to corrosion was noted as were the resistance to attacks from acid and he recognized the potential for this steel; he noted that it would be ideal within the cutlery industry. His current employer at this stage wouldn’t support him and thus he went to produce his new steel at a local cutler.

Within three weeks he perfected a hardening process for knifes and named the invention “rustless steel” however his friend Stuart named it “stainless steel” and since the name has stuck. It isn’t all that simple though because during the five year period between 1908 and the discovery in 1913 other scientists had potential claims to his title.

At a similar time Professor Dr Benno Strauss and his co worker Dr Eduard Maurer created a formula for non rusting steels which are insensitive to water and humidity , then on October 18th 1912, a patent was granted for the production of articles requiring high resistance to corrosion. This was a quantum leap in material research, and it was followed two months later by a patent for the production of articles requiring high resistance to corrosion through acids and extreme strength.

In Malmo in Sweden in 1914, products of stainless steel were presented to the public for the first time. In 1919 a further patent was granted in the medical field for the “production of artificial internal parts for human and animal bodies made of stainless steel”. The stainless steel material also became popular with architects. The Chrysler Building in New York (built 1928-1930) was the first to feature stainless steel roof cladding. Stainless steel was also used in the facade of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Kalifa in Dubai which was opened in 2010, this was recently seen in the film Mission Impossible staring Tom Cruise. Today we see stainless steel exhausts, stainless steel sinks and stainless steel screws.

This year it is widely celebrated 100 years of stainless steel by the Institute of Stainless Steel forum (ISSF) and other country forums like the British Stainless Steel Association (BSSA).

It was certainly a combined effort by all scientists and metallurgists which has created such a rich and versatile metal, it is safe to say we will never solve the speculation behind who invented stainless steel

Event - Cutlers’ Hall opens to reveal treasures (Sheffield)

The Cutlers’ Hall is throwing open its doors to give Sheffield people an insight into the wealth of treasures it contains and the history of the 388 year old Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire.
Master Cutler Pam Liversidge said: “The Cutlers’ Hall is a very important part of the city’s heritage yet there are people who have lived here all their lives and have never visited it.
“Sadly, there are some who do not even know of its existence. Now we hope to change that and encourage everyone to take pride in the history of Sheffield.”
The free open day takes place on Wednesday, February 15, during half term, so that children get a chance to see the Hall and its collections and Cutlers’ Company staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
The Company, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1624 to oversee the production of cutlery in the area and these days acts as a spokesman for the region’s manufacturing industries, is also arranging for wheelchair access and setting up a temporary cafĂ© to provide refreshments on the day.
There has been a Cutlers’ Hall on the present site since 1638. The current Hall was built in 1832 at a total cost of £8,066 and was then extended in the 1880s.
It has long been used for events and activities. Many people living in South Yorkshire today have attended lunches, dinners and dances there as well as business meetings and may even have sat exams there at one stage of their career, but this is the first Heritage Day. Features include panelling and lighting from Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympic, an overmantel, table and chests in the Master’s room that date from the 17th century and a silver collection of some 900 items to which a new piece, hallmarked in Sheffield is added every year. Some of this silver can be viewed in the Muniment room, which also houses the Norfolk Knife - a work of art designed to display the cutlers’ skills that was made for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and examples of the first stainless steel cutlery ever made, after Harry Brearley discovered how to produce the material.

News - Sheffield's Portland Works in bid to raise £500,000

The first place in the world to produce stainless steel cutlery could be lost forever if £500,000 cannot be raised by the end of January.

Portland Works was built in the 1870s near Bramall Lane, south of Sheffield city centre, and the Grade II*-listed building is now a workspace for specialist Sheffield trades.

The Portland Works Campaign (PWC) group said if £500,000 could not be raised to buy the building by 31 January, it was "only a matter of time" before it became flats and offices - a fate it narrowly escaped in 2009.

In total, 35 people work at Portland Works - artisans and crafts workers, including silver platers and engravers, cabinet makers, a specialist knife maker, artists and musicians. The campaign group wants it to become "a centre of excellence in Sheffield-type crafts".

In six months £130,000 has been raised from the sale of shares, ranging in price from £100 to £20,000. The shares are for sale until the end of January.

The Architectural Heritage Fund will provide a loan of £300,000, which leaves a £70,000 shortfall. The next move the PWC plans is a scheme to ask local businesses to invest in the building and become "Portland Patrons".

'Rustless steel'
In August 1913 Harry Brearley created a steel alloy of chromium and carbon, which he found resisted acid attack.

His employer, Firth Brown Steels, was not interested in the armament potential of what Brearley called "rustless steel" so he suggested it was used for cutlery, which until that point had been made of carbon steel which was liable to rust, or plated with nickel or silver, which eventually wore through to the base alloy.

Brearley's new alloy arguably was the first batch of what became known as stainless steel.

Stuart Mitchell forges specialist handmade knives, swords and daggers in an upstairs workshop. The family business moved there in 1980 from the nearby Stag Works.

"In 1913 Portland Works was the first place in the world to produce stainless steel. It is very important, not only for Sheffield but for the whole world."

Mr Mitchell said the building was "revolutionary" in its day for the way that cutlery craftsmen worked together under one roof for the first time.

Many of the Portland Works shareholders have a personal connection with Sheffield, while others were inspired to invest after visiting the building or hearing about its uncertain future.

Martin Winterton, from Skipton in North Yorkshire, is one of the shareholders. His great-great-great-grandfather William Willey worked in the Sheffield cutlery industry in 1790.

"Portland Works is so involved with the whole culture of Sheffield," said Mr Winterton. "If this building isn't preserved people will suddenly turn round and realise they haven't got it any more - everybody will wring their hands and say, 'if only'."

'Superficial work'
Shareholder Rob Marston said his interest in Sheffield's industrial history led him to invest in Portland Works. Rather than wanting to see a financial return on his investment, he views the shares as a way to preserve an important place.

"I liked the idea of keeping it working, not preserving it in aspic as somewhere you'd only visit on heritage open days," he said.

"It's living in the real world - they're finding new ways of using the building. It could be an exemplar, rolled out in other industrial areas of the city."


If the £500,000 target cannot be reached by 31 January, the PWC said shareholders' money would be returned.

Derek Morton, chair of the PWC, said for many tenants a move would not be financially viable.

"Half would survive a move but we'd lose something special. Portland Works has a very strong skill set which is special to Sheffield - it's the nature of the businesses."

PWC said it hoped to complete the purchase of the building in early to mid-2012.

Urgent repairs would be done first, although a structural survey showed little wrong with the fabric of the building.

Foliage grows from the brickwork and the wind whistles through broken windows. The portico at the entrance would be restored and the top-floor workshops would be made habitable. Most urgently, the building would be made watertight.

"There are no less than seven places in my workshop where I know I can't leave anything overnight in case it rains," said knife maker Mr Mitchell.

The PWC wants to run the site as a "community enterprise of traditional Sheffield crafts, preserved for future generations".
