Events - Doncaster Heritage Festival 2013

History is set to come alive this month thanks to Doncaster’s third Heritage Festival.

Doncaster Libraries, in partnership with Doncaster Museums, Doncaster Minster and the Tourist Information Centre, are celebrating the borough’s heritage with the third Doncaster Heritage Festival.

Doncaster Local Studies Library, in collaboration with the borough's Archives Department, has organized a packed, heritage-themed programme of events to bring the town’s past to life.

Highlights include an opportunity to find out more about our splendid Minster, a chance to gain skills that will enable you to look into your own family history and events offering an insight into the history of Hyde Park Cemetery and the servants of Cusworth Hall.”

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Ransome said: “This varied and illuminating festival highlights the excellent work our award winning libraries do all year round and shows how much Doncaster Libraries and Archives, Doncaster Museums, Doncaster Minster and the Tourist Information Centre have to offer.”

The festival will be launched on National Libraries Day (Saturday 9th Feb) with two events.

The tenth annual Doncaster Local History Fair will be held between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 9th February at Doncaster Museum, Chequer Road. Local and family history societies together with commercial groups will be on hand to offer advice and displays.

The Doncaster and District Family History Society will be launching a new genealogical service in conjunction with Doncaster Local Studies Library at the Central Library, Waterdale, on the same day, between 9.30am-5pm.

During a packed fortnight of events Doncaster Heritage Festival will include mainstream and nationally renowned speakers.

Event - Family History Fair (Doncaster)

LEARN how to equip yourself to delve back into your family history at this year’s “bigger and better” Family History Fair.


The Doncaster and District Family History Society is putting on the fair with even more stallholders and family history society groups than last year.

Among those bringing stalls to the event will be the Toll Bar History Project, Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery and supporters of Epworth Old Rectory.

There will also be a beginners corner and help desk for those just starting out in family history.

Talks will take place at 11am from Karen Walker on how to start researching your family tree, at 1pm Ian Mardson will explain how to use wills and other documents to further your family history.

Finally, there will be a talk from Paul Dryburgh at 2pm about the Cause Papers database and what it means for family history.

Event - Discover more about your family history (Doncaster)

COME along to a free event that will help you on your way to discovering your family history.

If you are intrigued to delve into your past but are unsure where to start, helpers will be on hand during the opening evening.

Run by the Doncaster and District Family History Society, members will guide people around its Palgrave Research Centre in Balby.

The King Edward Road centre stores around 55,000 pieces of information and historical material.

The charity-registered group will host the event on Tuesday, from 4pm until 8.30pm.

There will be tea and coffee available and residents are urged to use the Florence Street entrance.

The society is also looking for volunteers to help with a range of jobs such as administration, publicity and finance, transcribing and organising events.

Experience is not essential and training will be given.

Event - Calendar girl gives a talk (Doncaster)

The month in 1752 when the British people lost 11 days of their lives is the subject of next week’s talk to members of Doncaster and District Family History Society.

Nicola Down, a retired TV producer, will be talking about the time when this country belatedly changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar to catch up with the rest of Europe who were working on astronomical time.

The meeting takes place at the Doncaster College for the Deaf on Leger Way on Wednesday, July 27, and non-members are welcome to attend.

Event - Talk on early US settlers (Doncaster)

novelist and historian Sue Allen will be telling members of Doncaster and District Family History Society about the Pilgrim Fathers and Women at their next meeting on Wednesday, June 29, at Doncaster School for the Deaf in Leger Way.

William and Mary Brewster, from Scrooby, and William Bradford, from Austerfield, were among the first party to land in Plymouth Bay, America in 1620 and Bradford later became the second Governor of Massachusetts.

Sue, who will be in costume, was also until recently senior guide with Nottinghamshire-based Pilgrim Tours and delights in guiding modern day ‘pilgrims’ around the Mayflower Trail as she vividly retells their story in the places many of them knew so well.

Admission for non-members is £2.

Event - Searching for lost streets (Doncaster)

Historian Colin Bycroft is making a second attempt at delivering his lecture on Doncaster’s lost streets this week.



He experienced audio-visual technical problems when he attended a Doncaster and District Family History Society meeting last year but hopes for more success on Wednesday evening at the Doncaster Deaf School, Leger Way.


His talk is entitled The Disappearing Streets of Doncaster.


Colin will ‘walk’ his audience around the town, pointing out the streets that over the years have been bulldozed and re-developed.


The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission for non-members is £2.
