News - New opening times at Doncaster Museum and Cusworth Hall

A NEW timetable has been announced for Doncaster Museum and Cusworth Hall.

The changes will be introduced from Monday at both sites.

Deputy mayor Patricia Schofield said: “We have re-organised our opening hours across our museums service to make it easier for residents to know when they can access our services and to reflect the peak times of demand. The changes mean that Cusworth Hall is open longer both on week days and at the weekends and that opening times are more consistent across the two sites.”

Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery will be open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4.30pm and Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.15pm. The museum is closed on Sundays.

Cusworth Hall, Museum and Park is open from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4.30pm and Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.15pm and Sundays from 10.30am to 4.15pm. The Hall is closed on Fridays

Event - Two-day war at Cusworth

If you don’t know your Robert E Lee from your right knee, but you love a good American Civil War film, then a visit to Cusworth Hall could hold an enjoyable education this summer.

The American Civil War Society is waging a two-day war at the historic hall on July 2-3 as the northern Yankees take on the southern Confederates over the abolition of slavery.

The society – the biggest of its kind in the UK – will also be setting up camp in the hall’s gardens, to give vistors a taste of an authentic 1860s American battlefield.

The group, who are all enthusiastic volunteers, will be dressing up in costume, fighting battles and talking to visitors about American life 150 years ago.

There are even plans for their mounted cavalry section to put in an appearance.

Battles take place at Cusworth on both the Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm, while non-combatants will be re-enacting civillian life in the grounds from 10am-5pm.

Admission is £5 per car.

*For those who can’t get enough of historical re-enactments, the society will be back in South Yorkshire over the August Bank Holiday Weekend for a bumper multi-period weekend at Sheffield’s Norfolk Park.

The annual Sheffield Fayre, which takes place from August 28-29, will have re-enactors from Roman times to World War II, including the American Civil War Society. Admission is free.

News - Museum-goers have never had it so good (Cusworth Hall)

A new display at Cusworth Hall Museum explores life in Great Britain during the 1950s. ‘Having it So Good’ runs from 12 February - 23 April 2011.

The title of the display comes from Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s famous speech made in July 1957, when in light of unprecedented economic growth and near full employment he commented that "most of our people have never had it so good".

The display brings together iconic items like a Muffin the Mule puppet, ceramic pieces by Clarice Cliff and a selection of sheet music from the period to cast light on a decade that began with the country still subject to rationing, and went on to include the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 2nd, the Festival of Britain and the Suez Crisis.

Visitors will be able to find out about some of the social changes which took place during the decade, including the first large-scale arrivals of people from the Commonwealth and the beginnings of the pop music industry.

The display also includes a number of fun interactive toys including Fuzzy Felt, so there is no shortage of things to keep the younger visitor entertained.

Cusworth Hall Museum is open Tuesday - Friday 11am - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 1pm- 5pm. The museum is closed: Monday, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. The tea rooms are open every day 10am- 4pm.

Admission charges for Cusworth Hall Museum are as follows: adults - £2, over 60 and under 16s - £1, under 5s -Free. Entry to Cusworth Hall Museum shop and Cusworth Park is free.
