Save Worksop Tourist Information Centre

Despite the decision to Close Worksop Tourist Information Centre in 2005 was overturned Bassetlaw District Council are at it again! This time the excuse of saving money has been put forward as the reason (anyone else noticed the not so cheap village signs that have popped up recently?). The reason less people are visiting is that it is hidden away now from the general gaze of people since the library moved. A new town centre location should be found and the TIC promoted.

We lost Worksop Museum several years ago and the council have done nothing for the Towns history - Soon tourists will have no face to face contact with people who can guide them around the areas best visitors spots.

News - Restoration go-ahead (Worksop)

THE FUTURE of one of Worksop’s most historic and prestigious buildings has been secured after the council agreed £265,000 funds.


The former Worksop Library, on Memorial Avenue, has already been taken over by the Aurora Wellbeing cancer charity, with the aim of developing a specialist treatment centre.

But much more money needs to be raised to realise the project’s full potential of bringing the art deco building back to life.

Now, Bassetlaw Council has finalised its commitment to the Aurora project, pledging £235,000 to upgrade the building and £30,000 for vital electrical repair works.

Aurora will now forge ahead with an internal refit and meet the running costs once they are ready to move in.

The transformation into the ‘Aurora Wellbeing Centre’ will see a tea room, clothes emporium, gentle gym and therapy suite created.

“Everyone involved with Aurora is so grateful for the generosity of the council and we hope to continue working with the Bassetlaw community,” said trustee Jackie Simpkin.

“We are also honoured to have been given guardianship of such a lovely building which the people of Bassetlaw hold dear to their hearts. Now we can forge ahead.”

Event - Worksop Town Hall to Host Mining Exhibition

Worksop Town Hall will be hosting a Coal Mining Exhibition by the Nottingham Association of Ex and Retired Miners in the Ceres Suite on Friday 9th December from 11am – 4pm.

The exhibition features tools and items used in Coal Mining as well as hearing first hand anecdotes and experiences from former miners about life at the pit. The exhibition will also feature a number of short films about Coal Mining.

Councillor David Pressley, Portfolio Holder for Community Prosperity at Bassetlaw District Council said:

“Having started off my working life at Whitwell Pit I am looking forward to the Mining Exhibition coming to Worksop. Bassetlaw and the surrounding areas are steeped in mining history and tradition and this exhibition offers the chance for people to find out what life down the pit was all about.”

The Exhibition will take place in the Ceres Suite, Worksop Town Hall from 11am – 4pm on Friday 9th December.
